Twenty-Three

Valeria

I burrowed against his chest as his large body curled around me. Daiken’s back faced the mouth of the cave so he could act as a barrier for me from the chill of the night, something he’d insisted on when we’d decided to get some sleep. Even without his mating fever, the Taori’s body still ran warmer than mine, and he was significantly larger. That, and he hadn’t lost his desire to protect me.

It had been a long time since I’d actually slept next to a guy I’d had sex with, but any awkwardness was overshadowed by the fact that I was freezing and would have crawled inside him if I could. He was on his side facing me with his top arm draped over me and down my back to hold me closer. After a few minutes of worrying that he might still be in pain from the earlier battle, his deep sonorous breathing reassured me that he was okay. He was a loud sleeper, but he was alive.

My gratification that he had survived lessened with each bone-rattling snore. Between the cold and Daiken’s voluminous sleeping, there was no chance I’d be drifting off anytime soon.

This is why I don’t share a bed with anyone, I thought as his gravelly snores rumbled through me. Before I could get upset over how I was going to fall asleep, exhaustion had overtook me.

I had no idea how long I’d been asleep, but the fading light outside the cave had turned into blackness with only a glimmer of moonlight visible from where I lay curled into the Taori’s chest. I could make out shadows and the silhouette of the alien’s face, but that was all.

For a moment, I had no idea why I was awake. Then Daiken jerked, the arm on top of me spasming. He mumbled something I couldn’t make out as his eyes rolled under his lids.

He was having a nightmare. His body twitched more violently, and his mumbles became louder. Okay, this was even harder to sleep through than his snoring.

I gave him a gentle shake. “Daiken.”

My soft voice had no effect.

“Daiken.” I shook him harder, hoping to snap him from his turbulent nightmare. “Wake up. You’re having a bad dream.”

He went rigid, his arm clamping hard around me before he rolled me onto my back. I exhaled sharply from the shock as his heavy body pressed down on me. His eyes were closed but his face was twisted in anguish. Then he buried his head in the crook of my neck, his breath fast and jerky.

I was too startled to do anything, and the weight of him made it impossible to push him off me. When he groaned and ground the hard bar of his cock between my legs, my pulse skittered.

“Daiken!” I was no longer whispering, but my voice didn’t seem to be reaching him. He panted as he moved against me, the words he muttered darkly making no sense to me.

I finally brought my knee up in the space between his legs as hard as I could.
